On Jan. 28, Nebo School District held its Captains Academy on leadership and sportsmanship. Captains’ Academy is held three times each year and includes captains from junior high and high school. Winter Captains Academy includes boys’ basketball, girls’ basketball, wrestling, boys’ swimming, girls’ swimming, drill team and band.

r

Nebo School District Athletic Coordinator Mike Brown said, “This Captains Academy was very successful as we focused on leadership and sportsmanship. We asked the student athletes to find ways they could influence individuals, their teammates and classmates to become school leaders.”

r

Brown and Assistant Superintendent Scott Wilson started the academy by welcoming student leaders from 12 Nebo School District schools. Wilson introduced the idea of being an individual leader and told captivating stories of personal leaders in his life.

r

Brown led a discussion on “What is a leader?” Then the students worked in groups to answer the questions “What is a leader?” and “What is the role of a captain?”

r

Springville High School Athletic Director Mark Binks and Assistant Principal Scott Johnson led a discussion on how to instill sportsmanship in their schools.

r

All of the Student Captains sat at individual tables with their peers from other junior high and high schools. They listened to each presenter, then worked collaboratively to present back to the entire group their position and ideas.

r

Andrew Weeks, athletic director at Payson High School, introduced “Taking Care of You” and the athletic trainer’s role in schools.

r

Nebo School District gives a big thank you to Laura Salazar, communications director at Intermountain Healthcare, for the delicious lunch provided for the captains and leaders.
