r Utah Valley University sophomore Ana Raga tied for eighth individually to help lead the UVU women’s golf team to a ninth-place finish overall (out of 17 teams) at the Bob Hurley ORU Shootout on Tuesday at MeadowBrook Country Club in Tulsa, Okla.
Raga finished with a three-round total of 12 over par (225) after posting rounds of 76, 75 and 74 at the two-day event. The Wolverine sophomore saved her best round of the tournament for Tuesday’s final round as she carded one birdie and 13 pars en route to recording a 3 over 74. The eighth-place finish is the best of Raga’s collegiate career as is her three-round score of 12 over 225.
As a team, the Wolverines earned a ninth-place finish with a 78 over 930. After carding scores of 313 and 311 on Monday, UVU responded by shooting a 306 on Tuesday to post the top 10 team finish.
Lamar won the tournament at 43 over par (298-301-296: 895), while the host Oral Roberts Golden Eagles took second (306-299-303: 908) and Stephen F. Austin finished third (307-306-299: 912). Lamar’s Wenny Chang earned medalist honors after beating out her teammate Elodie Chapelet with an 8 over 221 (75-74-72).
By placing ninth, UVU finished ahead of Oklahoma Christian (930), Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (938), fellow WAC foe Grand Canyon (945), Incarnate Word (946), Drake (957), North Dakota (960), McLennon CC (971) and Northern Iowa (972) at the event and finished just six strokes back of the fourth-place Houston Baptist Huskies (924) at the tightly contested tournament.
Behind Raga’s eighth-place showing, true freshman Justine Lauer was next for Utah Valley by tying for 16th place with a 16 over 229. Lauer recorded scores of 78, 75 and 76 to earn the top 20 finish.
Sophomore Carly Dehlin moved up 13 spots on the leaderboard during Tuesday’s final round by carding a 4 over-par 75 on the day. After recording scores of 80 and 82 on Monday, Dehlin responded by firing a 75 on Tuesday to finish the tournament in a tie for 47th place with a 237. Redshirt freshman Kaylee Shimizu (79-79-86: 244) and senior Kimberly Nyhus (83-83-81: 247) rounded out UVU’s field of five at the event by tying for 70th and 72nd places respectively.
Utah Valley redshirt freshman Isabella Lesa, who participated at the event as an individual, finished in a tie for 59th place with a 241 (84-78-79).
The Wolverines will be off until Oct. 10-11 when they’ll head to Lakewood, Wash., to compete at Seattle U’s Pat Lesser Harbottle Invitational. The two-day, 54-hole tournament will be contested at the Tacoma Country & Golf Club. UVU will then close the fall portion of its 2016-17 schedule at the SCU Colby Invitational on Oct. 31-Nov. 1 in San Jose, Calif.
