It’s a challenge I never expected to face so often—telling a senior that we simply don’t have enough drivers to take them to a doctor’s appointment or social gathering. Each missed ride is more than an inconvenience; it’s a missed opportunity for connection, care, and independence simply because we don’t have enough volunteers.
Utah Valley Rides began in 2017 with one simple goal: provide reliable transportation to seniors ages 65 and older. From just two accessible vehicles, we’ve now grown into a fleet of seven. With four newer Ford Transit Vans, a Plymouth Voyager, our refurbished Dodge RAM, and our 2017 small Ford Transit Van, we’ve come a long way. The reality is, however, that we’re still not meeting the growing need.
In August 2024, we hit new records—3,509 miles traveled, 476 trips provided, all powered by 11 volunteers. But to continue providing this level of service—and to do even more—we need your help.
Volunteering as a driver isn’t just about getting someone from point A to point B; it’s about making a real difference in someone’s life. With just a few hours a week, you could ensure that no senior is left behind. If you are able, and this sounds like something that you would be interested in, we’d love you to join us.
Driver Testimonial:
“In 2019, my husband began needing kidney dialysis after suffering two heart attacks and a fall that left him with eight fractures in his back. It was extremely difficult to lift him in and out of his wheelchair into our low sedan, so I started looking for medical transportation options. That’s when I discovered Utah Valley Rides. I called, and Jim answered. He invited me to come in and talk, mentioning that they needed drivers and that perhaps we could work something out.
I told him I could volunteer one day a week if it meant my husband, Paul, could be added to their list of patients. I was so grateful to Jim for his help. After my husband suffered a third heart attack and sadly passed away on October 3rd, 2021, I promised Jim I would volunteer for Utah Valley Rides for the rest of my life. I am deeply thankful for this service.”
Volunteer Driver to the End:
Von joined Utah Valley Rides early on, shortly after the passing of his wife. In his grief, he was determined to find something meaningful to do with his time, and he found that purpose in helping others. He loved transporting our riders and often went above and beyond, calling us if we hadn’t yet scheduled him for his next shift.
Von’s dedication was truly inspiring—he kept driving well into his 80s, serving our community with warmth and enthusiasm. Sadly, while out four-wheeling, he was involved in a collision that resulted in a broken hip. Despite his strength and spirit, he passed away shortly after. Remarkably, Von was still driving for Utah Valley Rides just days before his accident, a testament to the heart he put into his work.
Utah Valley Rides is part of United Way Community Services.
