Young Mapleton residents work together to create ‘Special DOLLivery’

In mid-October a group of young Mapleton residents participated in a “doll packing” service event for the non-profit group Special DOLLivery. During the event, residents prepared 50 doll kits that will be given as holiday gifts to immigrant children living in West Valley City.

Each participant chose a doll from the table of refurbished American Girl dolls, then selected a handmade outfit complete with shoes to dress it in, in preparation to meet its new owner. Each doll was packed in a carrying bag with 15 outfits, a brush, and a doll quilt. By the end of the event, 50 dolls were dressed in their best and packed carefully in a kit, ready for their special “dollivery.”

Throughout the day volunteers were overheard exclaiming things like, “Look how cute!” and “Oh, I am so excited for the girl who gets this doll!”  These young humanitarians were learning the joy of serving others.

Special Dollivery is a 501c3organization that has been a force for good since its beginning in 2012. Volunteers throughout the state spend time fixing up donated 18″ American Girl dolls, sewing doll clothes, and purchasing brushes and accessories. Young volunteers then dress the dolls and pack the kits with care. The doll kits are regularly distributed to Utah Foster Care, the Children’s Justice Center, local tribal lands, refugee centers, and Mexico.
