The FilmQuest Film Festival, one of the premier genre film festivals in the United States, returned to Provo for its 11th year, drawing filmmakers and audiences alike to celebrate a diverse array of fantasy, horror, sci-fi, and experimental films. Running for 10 days, the festival has become a go-to destination for fans of boundary-pushing cinema and emerging filmmakers who bring a unique voice to the screen. This year’s festival brought another thrilling experience to Provo, bringing fans and filmmakers together in a celebration of all things imaginative, bold, and unforgettable.
Since its founding in 2014, FilmQuest has grown into an influential platform for genre cinema, spotlighting independent films that embrace imaginative storytelling and daring visuals. Held annually in Provo, the festival has garnered a loyal following for its ability to bring a rich mix of feature-length films, shorts, and student projects. It has grown into one of the largest genre festivals in the country and one of MovieMaker Magazine’s 2021 “Top 50 Film Festivals Worth the Entry Fee.” This year’s lineup was one of the strongest yet, with nearly 300 entries from more than 20 countries and dozens of independent filmmakers showcasing their work.
The 2024 FilmQuest festival curated a wide range of programming, with standout events that make it a unique experience. With 18 feature films across multiple genres, audiences were able to dive into an eclectic mix of horror, science fiction, and fantasy. This year’s award for best feature film went to The Island Between Tides, about a young woman who follows a mysterious melody to a remote tidal island. When she crosses back at the next low tide, she emerges into a world where 25 years have passed. But she soon finds she didn’t return alone, as threatening sightings of long-dead strangers crack open a mystery spanning centuries.
The festival also included special guest panels. These included workshops by industry professionals, including acclaimed directors, producers, and screenwriters who work in genre films, such as David Wardle from Saban Films, Daid Lawrence, who heads acquisitions for Glass House Distribution, and Kathryn Lyn, the two-time Hugo Award nominee for her work on Star Trek, currently working as the co-executive producer for Star Trek: Brave New Worlds. These discussions offered insights into the creative process, production challenges, and the future of genre cinema.
As a regional film festival, FilmQuest is dedicated to supporting independent filmmakers, particularly those from Utah and neighboring states. The festival has special categories for regional films and offers cash prizes and awards in multiple categories. Many filmmakers return year after year, crediting FilmQuest as a pivotal platform for gaining exposure and recognition within the indie film community.
“FilmQuest isn’t just a festival; it’s a community where genre filmmakers can connect, collaborate, and celebrate their work,” said Jonathan Martin, the festival’s founder and director. “Each year, we are blown away by the creativity and talent of the films submitted. It’s an honor to provide a space where these works can be experienced by an audience.”
FilmQuest’s reputation extends beyond Provo. It has consistently ranked among the top genre festivals in the U.S., joining the likes of Fantasia Fest and Screamfest in promoting horror, sci-fi, and fantasy filmmaking. The festival has also won praise for its inclusivity, promoting diverse voices and spotlighting women and underrepresented groups in genre film.
With the goal of celebrating film, FilmQuest welcomes attendees from all backgrounds, whether they are devoted fans of horror and sci-fi or newcomers eager to discover something new. The festival’s accessible ticket prices and scenic Provo setting make it a popular destination for genre enthusiasts looking to enjoy a week of creative and immersive cinema.
