Preparing Your Dog for a Celebration: Holiday Tips from a Professional Dog Trainer

The holiday season is here, and as we gather with family and friends to give thanks, it’s important to ensure that our dogs feel safe and comfortable. Thanksgiving can be a joyous occasion, but it can also present challenges for our dogs. Follow these helpful tips to ensure a happy, uneventful celebration for everyone involved!

1. Teach basic commands: “sit” and “stay”

One of the most effective ways to help your dog behave during holiday gatherings is to teach them basic commands now, and practice, practice, practice. Commands like “sit” and “stay” can be invaluable when greeting guests. A well-trained dog will be more likely to remain calm and composed, allowing your guests to arrive without chaos.

2. Set boundaries around food

Thanksgiving is known for its delicious feast, but not all of it is safe for our pets. Remind your guests not to feed your dog from the table, as some traditional Thanksgiving foods — such as cooked turkey bones, grapes, and nuts — can be harmful, leading to emergency vet visits or even worse consequences. Consider providing your guests with healthy dog treats instead, so they can still feel like they are sharing the holiday spirit with your dog.

3. Create a safe space

With the hustle and bustle of holiday celebrations, it’s essential to provide your dog with a quiet, safe space where they can retreat if they feel overwhelmed. This could be a cozy crate, a designated room, or a comfy spot with their favorite blanket; a place where no one is allowed to touch or disturb your dog.

4. Monitor stress levels

Every dog is unique, and it’s important to keep an eye on your pet’s stress levels throughout the day. If you notice warning signs, such as excessive panting, pacing, or hiding, give your dog a break from the festivities. Allow them to take a short walk or enjoy some quiet time in their safe space. Ensuring your dog feels comfortable will contribute to a more enjoyable Thanksgiving for everyone.

By following these tips, you can create a warm and welcoming environment for your dog while enjoying a stress-free holiday with loved ones.

Happy Thanksgiving to you and your furry friends!
