janae warner duty to be great empowerment

Two hundred and fifty years ago, this country was nothing but ordinary people standing up against one of the most powerful nations on Earth. High taxes. Heavy regulations. A Navy that could have crushed them without breaking a sweat.

If you looked at the odds on paper, they did not stand a chance —but they did not look at the odds. They did not sit around asking why they could not win. They fought with everything they had — their families, their safety, their lives, and for a belief.

And while this country has never been perfect, it still stands on rights that people bled for.

So what does that mean for you and me, sitting here nearly 250 years later?

I believe it means it is our duty to be great. Not just something nice to have. Not something that happens someday if it works out, but a duty to make it happen.

People fought and died so we would get the chance to become whoever we want to be — to dream wild, to play big, to be loud and outrageous, and to know that nothing gets to stop us from being exactly who we really are.

And they did not just hand us an opportunity; they handed us a responsibility to honor everything they risked by actually stepping into greatness ourselves.

I’ll be honest, I never thought about it as my duty before. I thought greatness was for other people — the ones with the resources, the degrees, the head-start.

I grew up poor. I barely got my GED. I spent years in survival mode raising my kids, never once thinking there was more waiting for me. Playing small felt safe and familiar, and like the responsible thing to do.

But then I think about the people who came before me and what they gave up so I could even have the option to dream bigger.

My grandparents opened a store during the great influenza outbreak. They did so even after losing a child to that very outbreak, just so their friends and neighbors would have fresh food. They wanted to make sure that one more family could be spared the heartbreak they experienced.

My parents’ home was never fancy, but it was full. Anyone who walked through that door got a meal, something baked, a kind ear, a hug — even when my parents were the ones who needed it themselves.

None of them played it safe. None of them decided their circumstances got the final word. Me going out into the world and staying small, staying quiet, staying safe, was never the legacy they left me. It is not what this country was founded on either. Every one of them handed me an opportunity to be great, and every single time fear shows up and tries to talk me out of becoming who I am meant to be, I think about my duty to them. And I choose GREAT.

In August 2025, I walked away from a job I had held for twelve years. Two months later, in October, I turned 60 and published my first book. A month after that, I launched my podcast. By December, I had co-founded a women’s group. And this past March, I built a consulting company from the ground up, all after 59 years of believing money and success and the good life were things that happened to other people, not to me.

I am not saying that to brag; I am saying it because if a woman who barely finished high school, who spent decades in survival mode, who is just now learning to believe she deserves financial abundance. If she can decide at 60 that it is her duty to be great, then you have absolutely no excuse to keep waiting for the right time.

There is no right time. There is just the time you have, and what you decide to do with it. I spent decades waiting for permission, waiting for someone to tell me I was allowed to want more. Nobody was ever going to hand me that permission slip. I had to write it myself, and so do you.

Somewhere along the way, I had mentors step into my life at the exact moment I felt hopeless, and they did not rescue me, they showed me what I was capable of. They taught me my potential. They taught me to love myself enough to actually go after it. That is the whole reason I do the work I do now. Every book I write, every podcast episode I record, every woman I sit across from in Together We Rise — every team I train through Igniting Growth Consulting, it is me paying forward what those mentors gave me.

Being great does not mean being perfect, and it definitely does not mean being fearless. It means doing it scared. It means feeling the risk, feeling the doubt, feeling like maybe you are too old, too late, too whatever, and doing it anyway, because somebody somewhere sacrificed so you would have the chance.

So here is my question for you, the same one I ask myself every time fear tries to talk me back into playing small: Who gave something up so you could be here? What did they risk so you would have the freedom to dream bigger than your circumstances?

Whoever they are, honor them. Not by staying comfortable. Not by staying safe. Honor them by becoming exactly who you were always meant to be.

It is your duty to be great. Who is ready to step into it?

About the Author:

Janae Warner is proof that it is never too late to become who you are meant to be. In August 2025, she walked away from a 12-year career. Two months later she turned 60 and published her first book, Rise Believe Become. Within the following five months she launched her podcast, Dreams Don’t Expire, co-founded the women’s empowerment community Together We Rise, and built Igniting Growth Consulting, a company helping small and midsize businesses create growth-minded, feedback-driven, people-first team cultures.

Janae grew up in poverty and left school with barely a GED, spending years in survival mode before a handful of mentors helped her see her own potential. That journey, from self-doubt to self-belief, is the foundation of everything she teaches today. Now a sassy, high-heel-wearing, unapologetically authentic speaker and consultant, Janae’s mission is simple: Help people see their potential and step into it, because it is never too late to go after your dreams.

Serve Daily is a great local newspaper full of uplifting stories. We've advertised the Elk Ridge City Celebration in SD the last two years. Chris is a pleasure to work with and his rates are reasonable.
