Spring Lake Elementary proudly honors Perry Ewell, an exceptional fifth-grade educator whose career spans an impressive 37 years. Mr. Ewell’s steadfast dedication has profoundly influenced countless students and fellow educators, leaving an indelible mark on educational communities.
Mr. Ewell’s remarkable teaching journey began at Sego Lily Elementary in the Alpine District and continued at Wilson Elementary in the Nebo School District. For the past 24 years, he has been a beacon of inspiration at Spring Lake Elementary, where his impact reverberates in every classroom. His career is not only a testament to his longevity but also his relentless pursuit of excellence and innovation in education.
Beyond his classroom duties, Ewell has significantly contributed as a mentor and leader. He has supervised student teachers on at least 15 occasions, guiding new educators and instilling them with core teaching values. His collaborative spirit is evident in his development and sharing of comprehensive science units and immersive U.S. History activities.
His commitment and dedication to student enrichment is unmatched. For 17 consecutive years, he has directed and produced class productions of A Christmas Carol and The Butterfly Effect, nurturing creativity and confidence among his students. His leadership extends to the Utah State Capitol, where he provides students with firsthand experiences of the legislative process through the Legislator for a Day program and annual legislative session observations.
For over two decades, he has prepared students for the Freedom Festival’s Hope of America concert and organized Christmas caroling performances at senior centers and special education schools. These cherished traditions not only bring joy to the community but also teach students the value of service.
As a lifelong learner and community leader, Ewell’s educational journey is marked by continuous learning and community involvement. With degrees in Elementary and Special Education and Recreation Management from BYU, complemented by Lane 6 status: Masters + 60, he exemplifies lifelong learning. He cites the Larry H. Miller Driven to Teach Program as a pivotal professional development experience in his career.
Outside the classroom, Ewell’s influence resonates throughout the community as a leader in civic, faith, and scouting organizations. His impact is both profound and widespread, earning him accolades such as Utah Teacher of the Week and the Crystal Apple Award.
When reflecting on his career, Ewell states simply, “I’m a teacher. I teach!” For him, teaching is a mission to help students realize their potential, become responsible citizens, and find joy in learning. He passionately asserts, “I teach because I love to see children grow and achieve. If I can do anything to foster that growth—Hallelujah!”
