Approximately 500 service members from the 2nd Battalion, 222nd Field Artillery, affectionately known as the “Triple Deuce,” deployed in January 2005 for 18 months.  The unit completed required pre-mobilization training and certifications at Camp Shelby, Miss., and moved onward to Ramadi, Al Anbar Province, Iraq, in June where they were assigned to the 2-28th Brigade Combat Team of the Pennsylvania National Guard in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

r

The Triple Deuce fulfilled three primary missions in Iraq: Conduct field artillery fires to disrupt insurgent operations and provide covering fires for friendly forces; defend forward-operating bases; and provide route and local community security.  In addition, the 2-222nd was also involved in the recruiting and training of Iraqi military and police forces.

r

The unit redeployed to home station in June 2006 with successful completion of their mission and enjoyed home-coming celebrations in St. George, Cedar City, Beaver, and Richfield.
