Springville Museum of Art seeking help with community art project

The Springville Museum of Art is holding its annual community art project and is asking the public’s assistance in helping them prepare for it. The museum is working to create a community mosaic mural with the use of bottle tops, and is asking for community members who have access to those, to donate them.

Donations are accepted at several locations including the museum itself, Springville Library, Springville Recreation Center, Springville Civic Center,  Reams and Springville elementary school. Those donating are asked to do so during business hours.

Community members are also invited to join in creating a community mural during the Springville Arts Festival on September 19-20, where bottle caps were arranged and glued onto a surface to create intricate mosaic patterns and images to the 8-foot by 12-foot particleboard base.

While where the art will be displayed is yet to be determined, officials at the museum say they are excited for the project for many reasons – one being environmental.

“There’s an environmental impact in recycling plastic lids,” museum executive director Emily Larsen said. She also added that repurposing bottle caps helps reduce the amount of plastic in landfills and oceans. Larsen also noted that projects like these “educate the public about the importance of recycling and reducing plastic consumption” and “highlight the potential for creative reuse and a more sustainable future.”

“It is estimated that over 20 million plastic caps and lids are discarded daily in the US,” Larsen continued. “A study cited by the Ocean Conservancy found that over 20,262,369 caps and lids are discarded each day. This figure is part of a broader issue of plastic pollution where millions of plastic bottles and other items are discarded daily.

“Let’s use (the bottle caps) to create something good instead.”
