The Art of Slowing Down

For many, exercise means speeding up. Run faster. Lift heavier. Do another set of reps. Push a little harder. Go a little further. Jennifer Pullman’s tai chi class at the Clyde Recreation Center, however, offers something different: A chance to slow down. Pullman teaches an introductory, beginner-friendly tai chi class designed to welcome everyone from regular participants to first-time attendees. Rather than focusing on intensity, the class emphasizes deliberate movement, balance, breathing, and awareness of the body. Tai chi originated in China as a martial art, but Pullman describes it as an “internal martial art.” “Instead of using our energy for martial purposes like offense and defense, that energy is

A Day in the Life of a Small Business Owner

“Today is hard, tomorrow will be worse, but the day after tomorrow will be sunshine.” It was the Friday of Labor Day weekend and I found myself sever ely short-staffed and desperate for help. With some employees out of town for the holiday and a few calling out sick, we were in a very tight spot. Though staffing shortages aren’t unheard of, the timing couldn’t have been worse. After all, the weekend before Labor Day is historically one of our busiest of the year. As I rushed to get things prepared for the day, a million questions and stresses blasted through my head. I thought of all the bad reviews

THRILLER: THE FINAL DANCE Celebrating 10 Years of a Spring Gardens Tradition

When Spring Gardens Assisted Living in Mapleton opened its doors 11 years ago, our activity director had a dream. With her love of dance and of Halloween, she wanted to teach the residents a seated version of Michael Jackson’s iconic “Thriller” dance and have them perform it for their families. The performance was an absolute hit. Everyone loved it. What began as a small performance for residents and their families, soon grew into something much bigger. Over the past decade, our Thriller tradition has become a community celebration filled with costumes, laughter, music, and memories. Now, after 10 incredible seasons, it’s time for one final dance. We invite you to

From Utah to Kyrgyzstan Genola Horseman Rides for Team USA

Last month, Genola resident, Brian Ewell, represented Team USA at the World Nomad Games that took place in Kyrgyzstan. The World Nomad Games is an international sports competition dedicated to ethnic and traditional sports practiced by nomadic cultures. Ewell was one of five men from Utah who represented the United States on the kok-boru team. Kok-boru is the national equestrian sport of Kyrgyzstan. Kok-boru translates to “gray wolf” and is a tradition that goes back thousands of years. In it, participants pass a goat carcass around while riding horseback, with the goal of trying to score by throwing the goat into the opposing team’s goal. According to ancestral lore, nomadic

The Further Adventures of David Hasselnott (Part 2)

Previously, I wrote about a botched lake rescue that earned this non-swimmer the nickname of “David Hasselnott.” (See: slowjoe40.blogspot.com) Today’s story is a little different because this time, I wasn’t the would-be rescuer. Last fall, we were on a mini-vacation with my wife’s extended family. At one point we went to an indoor swimming pool. One of the features of this pool was a large, twirly hydrotube slide. The kids love these kinds of slides, and I did too—when I was younger. But, at that point I hadn’t been down a hydrotube slide for several years. The kids really wanted me to go down it, so I decided I’d show
