Students across the Nebo School District got a delicious surprise this fall when the Nebo Child Nutrition team partnered with local Harward Farms to serve up fresh, sweet corn on the cob—picked straight from the field. The special lunch day was a huge hit, with participation numbers soaring as students eagerly lined up for the golden, sweet corn that tasted like summer.
This farm-to-school partnership is just one of the many ways the district is bringing fresh, local produce into school cafeterias—and it’s only the beginning. Building on the success of this year’s event, the Nebo team is already planning to offer even more farm-fresh favorites next fall, including Harward Farms’ juicy watermelon, crisp cantaloupe, and—of course—another round of their famously sweet corn on the cob. Apples from local orchards are currently being served in our lunch rooms.
“Our mission is to make school meals both nutritious and exciting,” said Ryan Kay, Coordinator of Child Nutrition for Nebo School District. “By partnering with local farms like Harward, we’re not only supporting our local economy, but also giving students the opportunity to enjoy fruits and vegetables at their peak freshness.”
Special menu days like these are not only a highlight for students—they’re a favorite among our lunch staff, too. From the kitchen to the serving line, our dedicated team looks forward to these events and loves seeing students’ faces light up when they see what’s on the tray. The energy and excitement in the cafeteria are what make these days so memorable.
The fun doesn’t stop there. Earlier this October, staff served spooky “Mummy Dogs,” which were a frightfully fun hit. Coming up, students can enjoy more festive favorites like Spider Web Waffles and Candy Corn Fruit Parfaits—bringing holiday cheer and nutritious ingredients together in creative ways.
Looking ahead, we’re excited to announce the return of a student favorite: “Walking Tacos” will be back for our Super Bowl Tailgate Lunch in February. This is a crowd-pleasing tradition that’s always a touchdown with students and staff alike.
The Child Nutrition team also invites all students to join in a warm and welcoming Thanksgiving lunch on November 20, featuring a seasonal treat: fresh-baked pumpkin cake drizzled with sweet glaze frosting. It’s the perfect way to celebrate gratitude, community, and the comforts of good food.
With creative menus, strong local partnerships, and a focus on student wellness, Nebo School District’s Child Nutrition team continues to raise the bar—making school lunch something to look forward to every day.
