Imagination Takes the Lead: Creative Dance Camps with Alli Moon

In a quiet Springville neighborhood, a basement becomes a stage. There are no bright competition lights, no elaborate costumes, and no pressure to perfect every pointed toe. Instead, a small group of children twirl, skip and stretch as they express themselves through movement.

At the center of it all is Alli Moon, a longtime dance educator who believes dance should be joyful, creative and accessible.

This July, Moon will host her creative dance camps in the basement studio of her home, offering children ages 3 to 8 an opportunity to explore movement in a low-pressure environment designed to nurture imagination as much as technique.

“I always think of dance as such a meaningful art form for kids and for families,” Moon said.

For parents who have considered enrolling a child in dance, but felt overwhelmed by the cost and commitment, Moon’s classes offer a different path. Traditional dance programs often involve yearlong commitments, recital fees, costumes and demanding schedules. For some families, especially those with very young children, that can feel like too much.

Moon understands that.

“Signing up for an entire year of dance is a burden for a lot of families,” she said. “The recital and everything that comes with it can be a lot financially and a big time-commitment, especially when we’re talking about three-year-olds.”

Her solution is simple: short, affordable summer camps with small class sizes and an emphasis on creative exploration.

Each class lasts 45 minutes and is limited to just eight children, allowing Moon to give each child personal attention. The camps consist of four sessions, culminating in what Moon calls an “in-formance,” which is an informal performance where families are invited to see what their children have been learning.

“Performing is important in dance, but we get to have an informal performance experience and do it with our families,” Moon said.

Creative dance differs from many introductory dance classes because it combines foundational technique with improvisation and storytelling.

A typical class includes a warm-up, technical exercises, across-the-floor movement and creative exploration.

“Creative dance is perfect for kids who love to dance in the kitchen,” Moon said. “They dance everywhere, and they just have this little bit of dance inside of them that they want to express.”

In addition to learning rhythm and coordination, children develop confidence and communication skills. They discover that movement can be a language all its own. For Moon, that expressive quality is what makes dance so valuable. Rather than focusing on trophies or rankings, her classes emphasize dance as an art form — something children can enjoy simply because it feels good to move.

Moon holds a degree in K–12 dance education and has taught children’s dance since 2013. Over the years, she has refined her creative dance approach in a variety of settings. In fact, while living in Pittsburgh, she ran affordable drop-in dance classes at a local bookstore, often incorporating children’s books into the lessons.

Hosting classes in her basement studio is both practical and personal. By teaching from home, Moon can keep costs low and maintain the intimate atmosphere that defines her camps.

That home-based setting also reflects Moon’s philosophy that dance doesn’t have to be reserved for elite performers; it can begin anywhere — in a living room, a kitchen, or a basement in Springville.

Moon said the final in-formance is less about putting on a polished show and more about celebrating what children have discovered. She hopes that her dance classes give families a chance  to step into their child’s imaginative world and see the joy that happens when movement and creativity come together.

Enrollment is open now for Moon’s classes, which take place on Tuesdays, June 30 to July 21. More information can be found on her website creative-dance-camps.github.io.
