More than a name: 3 Morons Band proves music builds community

More than a name: 3 Morons Band proves music builds community.

I strongly believe that, as Tom Petty said, “Music is probably the one real magic I have encountered in my life.” The benefits of music can be felt personally, in local communities, and throughout the world. Studies have found, and continue to find that music is healing to the body, mind and spirit, and improves intelligence in all those areas.

Now that you know that music improves intelligence, allow me to introduce the local youth band, 3 Morons! (Sarcasm intended). 3 Morons consists of four exceptional young men from several cities in the county. The running joke is deciding which one is not the moron. This band has made great strides in their musicianship and teamwork over the past two years, performing at South County Lanes, The Angelus Theatre, Boardwalk, The Rise, Here Comes the Sun Festival, and Young Living Farms Fall Festival. As a Battle of the Bands winner, the band currently has a goal to release six original songs this year to all streaming platforms.

3 Morons is a great example of the fantastic music community we have in the area. With the help of parents and family of each bandmember, they all separately began learning their instruments. Along the way, teachers from Boothe Music in Spanish Fork have taught them and the store has provided sales and services to help these young musicians.

The band all began when several current members joined a local summer student band program titled, Real Rock Band. Real Rock Band was started in 2008 by Curt Gordon, owner of The Angelus Theatre, who worked for Boothe Brothers Music at the time. Curt and the Boothe family have been a tremendous service to the community, and have influenced thousands of musicians in the community.

This program is now run by Rory Childs of Olde Main Studios in Springville, and it has mentors and coaches, and those in attendance work together as a band, to perform a concert at the Angelus Theatre. According to current band members of 3 Morons!, this first meeting at Real Rock Band has led to two great years performing as a band together. Band members also spoke on the impact music has had on their lives.

“Music has always, in my mind, been my greatest form of expression, whether it be written songs, learning a whole album, or listening to Black Sabbath,” said bassist and back vocalist Cooper Watkins. “Through playing music I have been able to meet some incredible people and make some long lasting friends, which I am incredibly grateful for. Music makes me who I am. It’s what defines my life.”

“Music has helped me develop my talents,” drummer Slate Chappell said. “Through music I have learned that it is a kind of language that can convey all kinds of feelings to everyone. When I play my drums I relax and enjoy using my body. Additionally, it helps me to be better at being in front of people because of performing at shows. I love it.”

“I’ve always loved music and being able to play music for other people to listen to. It makes me happy,” Lead guitarist and back vocalist McCoy Jensen said.

“Music is one of the key things that gets me through the day,” Lead vocalist and guitarist  Grady Carter said. “It’s something I’m passionate about, and something I find interesting to its core. I grew up around plenty of music and instruments, and now I can’t think of a day I don’t listen to it.”

For musicians, sharing music with the community is a blessing and a great way to serve. For the community, supporting musicians and joining with them through music brings healing, joy, and unity to our community.

3 Morons! Will be performing at the Here Comes the Sun Rock Festival in Payson that will be held on June 27 and 28.
