The Nebo Novelists: A Haven for Local Writers

When someone mentions that Springville is Art City, it conjures images of painting and sculptures. However, the city is home to a number of artists whose work isn’t as visible. Twice a month, on the second and fourth Tuesday, a group of writers gather together in a quiet room of the Springville library, and together they talk, read, and critique each other’s writing. They’re called the Nebo Novelists, and they work together to get better at their craft, while spending time with people who share the same passion.

The group is the local chapter from the League of Utah Writers, a statewide organization that has made a space for writers of all genres for decades. As a proud chapter of the League of Utah Writers, this community of wordsmiths has been fostering creativity, offering support, and celebrating the art of storytelling for years.

The Nebo Novelists bring together a diverse group of individuals, each united by their love for the written word. From budding poets to experienced novelists, members find a welcoming environment where their voices are heard and their stories valued. The bi-monthly meetings provide a platform for sharing works-in-progress, receiving constructive feedback, and engaging in lively discussions about the craft of writing.

Typically, members of the group come prepared with a selection of their work, no more than 1500 words long. The work is shared with the group, either by handing out copies or reading it aloud. The members in attendance then offer their thoughts and opinions, helping to craft stronger prose and characters, tightening syntax and grammar, and encouraging one another to continue with their project.

One of the standout features of the Nebo Novelists is their commitment to education and skill development. Presented by the League, the chapter regularly hosts workshops led by industry professionals, covering topics such as character development, world-building, and the ins and outs of publishing. These sessions are invaluable for writers looking to hone their craft or navigate the often-daunting publishing world.

In addition to workshops, the League of Utah Writers also organizes community events. These gatherings not only showcase members’ talents but also strengthen the connection between writers and the broader community.

The chapter’s affiliation with the League of Utah Writers ties it to a larger network of support and resources. Through this connection, members gain access to statewide conferences, contests, and publishing opportunities, further enriching their writing journey.

Attending the meetings is a great way to meet other writers, even without a project prepared to share. It’s a fun, welcoming environment, often with some sort of chocolate available to attendees. It can be a difficult thing to write and share one’s work, so making a relaxing environment with a few sweet treats helps ease the stress of being so open and vulnerable in front of a group.

For those interested in joining, the Nebo Novelists welcome writers of all genres and experience levels. Membership offers a chance to grow as a writer, connect with like-minded individuals, and become part of a vibrant creative community. While becoming a member of the Nebo Novelists technically requires someone to be a paying member of the League of Utah Writers, visitors are encouraged to attend and experience the group’s dynamic atmosphere firsthand. They’re open to those who want to come, talk, and share, with the hope that they’ll become permanent parts of the group.

Whether you’re polishing your first poem, drafting a novel, or simply seeking inspiration, the Nebo Novelists offer a space where creativity flourishes and friendships thrive. With its commitment to nurturing talent and celebrating the written word, the Nebo Novelists continue to leave an indelible mark on Utah’s literary landscape. Here’s to the stories yet to be told and the writers who bring them to life. For more information, visit the official webpage of the League of Utah Writers, or sign up for their newsletter to be notified of meeting times.

Serve Daily is a great local newspaper full of uplifting stories. We've advertised the Elk Ridge City Celebration in SD the last two years. Chris is a pleasure to work with and his rates are reasonable.
