Nebo Education Foundation Gives Grants April 2019

The Nebo Education Foundation meets each month to discuss submitted educational grant proposals for students in Nebo School District. One of the goals of the foundation is to fund worthwhile projects in the district that provide resources to enrich student learning.  These grants are funded through the fund-raising efforts of the Nebo Education Foundation board. One fund-raising effort is the annual “Green Fever” golf tournament that helps fund these various grants throughout the year.  The “Green Fever” tournament will be Thursday, May 16, at Hobble Creek golf course. The foundation also accepts donations from individuals and businesses to support projects.

Stacy Nance, president, said, “It’s exciting to be a part of an organization that improves the learning opportunities for our kids in Nebo School District. With the tremendous support of local businesses and giving citizens, the Nebo Education Foundation can provide resources to teachers to enhance the quality of education for our kids in the classroom. Everyone wins when the kids benefit.”

Brockbank Elementary – Sherry Plaisted

Sherry Plaisted, facilitator at Brockbank Elementary said, “Thank you once again. Nebo Foundation has been an amazing support to Brockbank Elementary over the years, and we are very grateful. The foundation is always so willing to make sure our libraries are supported and our efforts to improve our students reading skills are aided. I appreciate your mission to provide assistance to worthy causes in Nebo School District.”

Salem Junior – Ryan Williams

“Students at Salem Junior High School love using the amazing technology available today.  For example, since Marketing and innovation are both key principles of the Salem Junior High Yearbook class, students in the class create video advertisements and to document the school year not just through photography but also through video footage.  Other classes in our school also frequently do video assignments.  Honors English 9 classes produce a problem/solution argumentative video in Term 4.  The Creative Writing classes write screenplays they can then film.  Finally, the Journalism class at our school produces a weekly school news show.  Each of these classes and the students in them will benefit from having access to professional audio/video equipment, and we are grateful to the Nebo Education Foundation for helping us meet our needs,” stated Ryan Williams, English teacher at Salem Junior High.

Brockbank Elementary – Sixth Grade Team

“Thank you Nebo Education Foundation for funding our field trip to Salem Pond. The sixth grade at Brockbank Elementary greatly benefits from this science-based field trip. This is a vital part of our students’ learning and a fantastic hands-on experience. At Salem Pond, we can do many activities related to our science curriculum that enriches our students learning. For example, Salem Pond enables us to discuss real-life scenarios regarding ecosystems and the water cycle. Brockbank Elementary sixth-grade teachers and students appreciate the support from the Nebo Education Foundation. We could not do this without your help! Santaquin Elementary – Megan Camper

Megan Camper, second-grade teacher at Santaquin, said, “Thank you for coming to Santaquin today. My class is so excited!!! Our Digital Coach, Charles Hanosek, collaborated with me to send you this summary. Charles has been so helpful in helping me integrate technology into the classroom.  
“We love to use technology in our class. These are some of the things we use Chromebooks for: Google Classroom, helping students manage their digital work. It also saves lots of time for me as a teacher! Adobe Spark, students creating videos about their informational writing. Online virtual manipulatives, students can conceptually see the ideas being taught and then solidify their understanding with the manipulatives. Audio Voice Recordings & Creating QR Codes, book Trailers for Other Students. Digital Breakouts, 4 C’s of 21st Century Skills, Higher Level Thinking & Core Review. Red Ball Challenge, collaboration, critical thinking, learning to use Google Slides. NearPod, engaging students through this amazing presentation tool.

The learning is in front of them instead of being at the front of the classroom. Students can even go on virtual field trips!-Prodigy-Math Review.-Imagine Learning-Improving Reading Skills.

“When I use technology in my class student engagement goes way up! Engagement is not students paying attention or looking busy, but rather actually engaging and interacting with the task. Their focus and learning is deepened through the digital task. I think one important thing is that technology is not replacing what I am doing in the classroom. I use it to enhance what I am already doing. Students can go farther and deepen their learning by using technology. This level of learning cannot be achieved without the use of technology. When using technology in my classroom our school Digital Coach is always telling the teachers how important it is to have the 6 Cs. (Creativity, Communication, Collaboration, Critical Thinking, Citizenship, and Character education.)

Rees Elementary – Sixth-Grade Team

“The sixth-grade team is so excited to take our group of students to the Salem Wetlands! We teach students about ecosystems, environment, and flow of matter.  But, when we go to the wetlands in Salem, we learn together about a complex, fun, and exciting ecosystem-full of insect larvae, largemouth bass, ducks, swans, red-eared turtles, and muskrats. Science comes alive when we take our students to Salem Pond! Thank you to all of our donors!” exclaimed Nate Wright, sixth-grade teacher at Rees Elementary.

Wilson Elementary – Nancy Melander

“We are so thankful for the grant that can help students with faster models so they earn their green lights in math Reflex. We will be using the Chromebooks on other programs throughout the day too. Technology is where it’s at. A sincere thanks to the Nebo Foundation and their many contributors. Shawnee McMullin, first-grade teacher at Santaquin Elementary said, “Thank you so much for approving my grant! My little firsties and I are beyond excited to have iPads for our classroom! iPads have been a wish for me but always out of my reach. This is my first time writing a grant and can’t express how excited and grateful I am! Thank you for making my wish come true! We can’t wait to use them for reading, science, math, writing and everything in between! iPads are so engaging and easy to use for first graders. I’ve already got so many plans and ideas. Thank you, thank you!”
