Steven Michael Clark of Mapleton, Utah died July 23, 2022 at age 74 in Provo, Utah of a heart attack.

Steve was born at Duke’s Memorial Hospital on Jan. 6, 1948 in Peru, Indiana. His parents, Mary Lou Hostetler and DeRees Carl Clark had 12 children: DeRees, Steven, Jan, Donna, John, Louie, Connie, Cathy, David, Timothy, Rodney, and Bradley. Steve graduated from Peru High School and enjoyed music, especially jazz and the blues. He played the cornet in the marching band and liked to dance. He taught himself a number of instruments (including the piano, guitar, cornet, trumpet and harmonica) and loved playing them and singing to and with others.

Steve graduated from Brigham Young University with a Bachelors of Science in 1972. He married Carolyn Rae Olsen on February 8, 1973 in the Oakland, CA LDS Temple. They settled in Tracy, CA where they resided for 46 years and raised a family of 13 children (their “baker’s dozen”). He worked as a Correctional Officer at Deuel Vocational Institute, and worked for many years at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in Communications Security and as an Administrator. In his early years at LLNL, he graduated from the Police Academy in Modesto. He served as secretary for ASIS International and also served on the Tracy City Planning Commission.

Steve was industrious and a hard worker. He loved to learn and to gain knowledge and experience in whatever he was working on. He and Carolyn designed and built their family home in Tracy, CA. He has built or helped build at least a dozen homes.

Steve was always willing to help others, whether that was with physical labor, financially, or just being a kind and listening ear. He often brought one or more of his children along with him when he served those around him, leaving a legacy of good works and blessings that will continue on. He loved to study and share what he learned with his family. He was very caring and loved to make people laugh.

Steve was a devout member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. One of his greatest joys was serving missions. He served 3 summer missions in the Midwest as a teen, and a full time mission for 28 months as a young man in the North Central Mexican mission. Later in life he served a ward mission, a stake mission and he and Carolyn served together more recently as addiction recovery missionaries, and as temple missionaries in Hermosillo, Mexico and Santiago, Chile. For anyone counting (he was), that’s 9 missions! He was excited to be preparing to serve a 10th and final mission. He finally got his call to serve that 10th mission and we know he is busy working hard on the other side doing “whatever they tell [him] to do.”

In addition to his service as a missionary, Steve served faithfully throughout his life in many callings. He was a president of the quorum of the 70 in his Stake, served as Stake Executive Secretary, was a Seminary teacher for 10 years, and was a Bishop for a total of eight and a half years. Steve was an avid scouter, completed Wood Badge Training and his tickets, and he volunteered decades of his life to the Boy Scouts Of America.

Steve is survived by his wife, Carolyn, his mother, Mary Lou, 10 siblings: Jan, Donna, John, Louie, Connie, Cathy, David, Timothy, Rodney, and Bradley, 13 children and their spouses: Amy (Craig) Bingham, Benjamin (Spring) Clark, Emily (Glenn) Hickman, Jeremy Clark, Sarah (Ossian) Hansen, Melissa (Benjamin) Nichols, Eugene Clark, Steven (Katie) Clark, Cassidy (Matthew) Elliott, Logan Clark, Christine (Chad) Hickman, Hyrum (Diana) Clark, and Lincoln (Myia) Clark, and 52 grandchildren.

A viewing will be held at Spring Creek Utah Mortuary, 737 N Main Street, Springville, UT on Friday evening, July 29, 2022, from 6-7:30 pm. There will also be a short viewing Saturday morning, July 30, 2022, at the Historic Mapleton White Church in Mapleton, Utah, 31 W Maple St, from 9:30-10:30 followed by the funeral service at 11. He will be laid to rest at the Orem Cemetery at 12:30 pm. The funeral service will be streamed live at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-qVS0YAh_TE

Donations for flowers can be sent via Venmo @Janice-Williams-55 or you can give a donation to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints HUMANITARIAN AID.

Please share your memories of Steve, as well as anything he taught you by word or example for the family to treasure.

Thank you,
Carolyn and Family

Chris is one of the nicest people I know. Serve Daily is his motto, and also his wonderful publication. The stories are informative, entertaining, and it's so much fun to occasionally see people I actually know featured. Every time I see the paper, my spirits are lifted and I am reminded to Serve Daily. Thanks Chris!

Serve Daily is a great local newspaper full of uplifting stories. We've advertised the Elk Ridge City Celebration in SD the last two years. Chris is a pleasure to work with and his rates are reasonable.
