More Than a Name: 3 Morons Band Proves Music Builds Community

I strongly believe that, as Tom Petty said, “Music is probably the one real magic I have encountered in my life.” The benefits of music can be felt personally, in local communities, and throughout the world. Studies have found, and continue to find, these magical benefits; from health and healing of our bodies, mind, and spirits; to the improvements in overall learning in all areas of our life; and to bringing people together from all walks of life.
With all of those magical benefits about improving our communities and intelligence, allow me to introduce the local youth band, 3 Morons! (Sarcasm intended). 3 Morons consists of 4 exceptional young men from several cities in the county. The running joke is deciding which one is not the moron. This band has made great strides in their musicianship and teamwork over the past two years, performing at South County Lanes, The Angelus Theatre, Boardwalk, The Rise, Here Comes the Sun Festival, and Young Living Farms Fall Festival. As a Battle of the bands winner, they currently have a goal to release 6 original songs this year to all streaming platforms.
The world is in great need of more music education. When students play music, it allows a part of their artistic mind to express itself, which is very important in helping to balance a child intellectually, spiritually, and emotionally.
Paul Reed Smith, President of PRS Guitars
3 Morons are a great example of the fantastic music community we have in the area. With the help of their parents and family, they all separately began learning their instruments. Along the way, teachers from Boothe Music in Spanish Fork have taught them and the store has provided sales and services to help these young musicians. A few years back, some of the members joined Real Rock Band, a local summer student band program where students are brought together as a band, with the guidance of coaches, to learn songs over the summer culminating in a concert at the end of summer at The Angelus Theatre. The remaining current members joined the program and band later and now have been performing together for nearly two years.
Real Rock Band was started in 2008 by Curt Gordon, owner of The Angelus Theatre, who worked for Boothe Brothers Music at the time. Curt and the Boothe family have been a tremendous service to the community, and have influenced 1000’s of musicians in the community.
Real Rock Band Summer program is currently directed by Rory Childs of Olde Main Studios in Springville. Students that have wanted to continue beyond the summer have done so through Olde Main Studios’ year round student band program, which has added many more performance opportunities and recording opportunities to release original music to the world.
For musicians, sharing music with the community is a blessing and a great way to serve. For the community, supporting musicians and joining with them through music brings healing, joy, and unity to our community.
We are the same. There is no difference anywhere in the world. People are people. They laugh, cry, feel, and love, and music seems to be the common denomination that brings us all together. Music cuts through all boundaries and goes right to the soul.
Willie Nelson
How do the band members feel about music?
Cooper, “Music has always, in my mind, been my greatest form of expression, whether it be written songs, learning a whole album, or listening to Black Sabbath. Through playing music I have been able to meet some incredible people and make some long lasting friends, which I am incredibly grateful for. Music makes me who I am. It’s what defines my life.”
Slate, “Music has helped me develop my talents. Through music I have learned that it is a kind of language that can convey all kinds of feelings to everyone. When I play my drums I relax and enjoy using my body. Additionally, it helps me to be better at being in front of people because of performing at shows. I love it.”
McCoy, “I’ve always loved music and being able to play music for other people to listen to. It makes me happy.”
Grady, “Music is one of the key things that gets me through the day. It’s something I’m passionate about, and something I find interesting to it’s core. I grew up around plenty of music and instruments, and now I can’t think of a day I don’t listen to it.”
3 Morons have several opportunities to share their music with the community and support other local businesses in May.
