I’m Dreaming of a White-ish Christmas

A snowmobile carving through deep mountain powder, illustrating the "White-ish Christmas" dream of keeping snow off the roads.

I’m dreaming of a White Christmas. Sort of.

It’s pretty simple: I like the look of fresh snow on the ground at Christmas time. But, I don’t like driving in the snow. And so, I’m dreaming of a White Christmas. Sort of.

I’ve lived my entire life in either Utah or Idaho, so I know about snow in the winter. I know we need the snow. The more snow we get in the mountains during the winter, the better it is for our water supply for the upcoming summer. A large snowpack in the mountains is a very good thing. (As long as it doesn’t melt all at once!) So, I like snow in the mountains.

Also, I like snow on the ground in the yard and the park. Everything is prettier when it is covered in snow. It’s great to have snow for building snowmen and snow forts. Snowball fights can be fun (sometimes.) And the sledding hill pretty much needs snow to justify its existence. (Otherwise, it would just be a hill.)

When I was growing up in Idaho, my Dad had some snowmobiles. So, I spent a fair amount of time riding and/or driving snowmobiles. And it was always a thrill to blast through a drift of fresh powdered snow!

And here in Utah, there are plenty of people who like to strap on skis to slide down the slopes–which is much more enjoyable when there is lots of fresh snow. (I’m not much of a skier myself. I’m too clumsy, and I can’t afford the season pass.)

So, in the wintertime I’m quite fond of snow covering (almost) everything!

But, “almost” is a pretty big word. As much as I like snow, I don’t really want any on the roads. Or the sidewalks.

I recently switched jobs, so now I have a bit of a commute, and I spend a lot more time on the road. I’m not really looking forward to a winter spent on ice-packed or snow-covered roadways. Call me crazy, but I prefer driving on dry pavement where I can actually see the lines on the edge and center of the road. (Driving on ice could be exciting, but I wouldn’t recommend it.)

Also, I don’t care for snow when it is on my driveway or sidewalks. Why? Because I have to shovel it. And there are plenty of things I’d rather spend time doing than shoveling snow, many of which don’t hurt my back.

So, my preferred snow storm would dump plenty of snow on the mountains and the yard, but leave the streets and sidewalks nice and clear. It probably won’t happen, but it’s my dream: A White-ish Christmas!

Serve Daily is a great local newspaper full of uplifting stories. We've advertised the Elk Ridge City Celebration in SD the last two years. Chris is a pleasure to work with and his rates are reasonable.
